Psalm 101: Rules to Govern By

Play/Pause Stop
I will sing of mercy and judgment: unto thee, O LORD, will I sing. I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way. O when wilt thou come unto me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart. —Psalm 101:1, 2

Psalm 101 was composed early in David’s reign.

It sets forth principles of conduct for a ruler.

The first part of the psalm deals with personal objectives (vv. 1–4), while the second part deals with those actions that are public in nature (vv. 5–8).

These few verses show us the decency of David and the justice of his views.

David vows to conduct himself wisely in all things—a tall order for one who will soon be surrounded by sycophants and self-serving ministers.

It will take great strength of will not to succumb to pride and ego.

Eschewing the pomp and riches of the court will require humility and remembrance that all one possesses comes from the Lord.

First and foremost, David praises God for His mercy and judgment toward all humankind. He longs for closer fellowship with his God, which alone can keep him centered and focused on what is important (vv. 1, 2). David further pledges not to look upon evil, for he fears the influence it might have. He vows to avoid evil and not linger in its presence long enough to be affected (v. 3). A perverted heart is to be shunned, as is association with wicked people (v. 4).

David next turns to his choice of officials.

He will not tolerate among his counselors those who are proud or slander others for their own advancement (v. 5). Rather, he will surround himself with those who have the well-being of Israel as their focus. “David resolves to keep on the watch for faithful men who will make worthy members of his court.” “David desires his official associates to be like him [v. 6].” Those who practice deceit or tell lies will have no place among his officials (v. 7).

And he will do his best to make his capital city an example for the rest of the country (v. 8). These were certainly lofty aspirations.

Unfortunately, resolutions often fail to materialize under everyday trials and temptations. Staying connected to God is vital if one wants to reach his or her highest potential. “Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee; / Surely His goodness and mercy here daily attend thee.”
