Psalm 46: A Place of Safety

Play/Pause Stop
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. —Psalm 46:1–3

Psalm 46 has been a source of strength and solace to Christians through the ages. It has been called Luther’s Psalm because it is said that Martin Luther sang it during times of trouble, and this is reflected in his amazing song “A Mighty Fortress.” “It may well be the hymn of God’s people during the increasing perils of the last days.” God reigns supreme over all earthly powers, and He provides His people a place of refuge (vv. 1–3).

“The convulsions of nature, the earthquake that throws the mountains into the sea, the roaring of the waves, the cataclysm of the tidal wave—these phenomena as well as any commotions and revolutions in the political world need not shake the one who trusts in God. Whatever may happen, God is a proved refuge.” The psalm depicts the world in turmoil (vv. 1–3) and then shows the calm and serenity God gives His followers during mayhem (vv. 4–7).

God’s city sits placidly amid the chaos of the kingdoms of the earth.

Nations rise and fall, but God’s city shall not be moved.

“The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge” (v. 7).

This is the crux of the entire psalm.

“We have nothing to fear for the future, except as we shall forget the way the Lord has led us, and His teaching in our past history.” God will ultimately cause war to cease, and all nations will bow in submission to His power.

The picture painted is one of a battlefield in ruin—broken bows, burned chariots, and severed spears litter the ground. God reigns supreme, and all is serene.

“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth” (v. 10). “When storms of sharp distress invade; . . . Behold Him present with His aid!”
