Some name-brand stores pride themselves on carrying expensive merchandise. Generally, it is kept under lock and key in display cases or placed on high shelves beyond the reach of customers. Entrepreneurs consider such merchandise precious.
The reality is some of us may never be able to afford name-brand items. However, we need to realize that we possess commodities that are more valuable.
First, we, ourselves, are of high value. The psalmist David reminds us that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14, KJV)! And Proverbs, in describing the virtuous woman, says that “her price is far above rubies” and “her merchandise is good” (Proverbs 31:10, 18, KJV). A woman who fears the Lord is of great value. Unfortunately, many think that education, socioeconomic status, and external appearances define who they are.
They allow society’s benchmarks to determine their worth.
Thankfully, God places high value on each of His children.
Second, the virtues within us are priceless.
Who can put a price tag on faith, honesty, kindness, love, integrity, compassion, and courage? These virtues shine in a dark world and illuminate it.
In His sermon on the mount, Jesus admonished his hearers.
“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16, KJV).
That same message is for us today.
As people witness our positive lifestyle, they will be drawn to Jesus.
Our good merchandise, our good works, will speak eloquently.
Third, we add value to our merchandise when we spend time in spiritual growth activities. Peter bids us, “Grow in grace, and in the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18, KJV). Through the process of sanctification, we develop Christlike characters, which is all we will take with us to heaven. Let us lay up treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust corrupt, and thieves do not steal or destroy.
Our good deeds are recorded in the books of heaven! Isaiah says, “You will be a crown of splendor in the LORD’s hand, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God” (Isaiah 62:3, ISV). That’s our worth! Yes, sisters, our merchandise is good!
