The Power of the Bible

Play/Pause Stop
So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, . . . blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers that were in their hands. . . . And they cried, The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon. And they stood every man in his place round about the camp: and all the host ran, and cried, and fled. —Judges 7:19–21, KJV

How I yearned for my kids to enjoy the experience of traveling from the United States, through Mexico, to my country of Belize.

One summer, despite the rising threat of highway robbery in Mexico, we packed our seven-year-old Corbin and five-year-old Haadiya and set off.

We cleared customs and immigration and began the drive through Matamoros, Mexico. I drove one car for my nephew, and my husband drove our car.

Our omniscient God, knowing the future, works in such mysterious ways—right after we crossed the border, He directed my nephew to tow the car I was driving with his other vehicle so that I could ride with my husband and kids.

My daughter fell asleep while my son enjoyed the view.

An hour later, my husband exclaimed, “Is this a holdup?” He told me to give him a few pesos for the robbers. I quickly took my wedding band and slid it inside my Bible tucked into the door compartment. I separated our money, gave some to my husband, hid some in my clothing, and gave some to my son to stick under his car seat.

His eyes filled with tears, but he obediently hid the money.

Ahead, a number of civilian men with machine guns diverted traffic toward a gas station. My nephew stood beside his cars, which had already been unhooked by the robbers. Almost every car had an armed civilian demanding money from the occupants.

As my husband slowly drove into the gas station, two robbers started to hit the side of the car, and my husband stopped. One went to his window and one to mine, demanding to see our licenses. Tremblingly, we handed them over, and as I looked down, I saw my ring reflected between the golden tabs of my Bible. I touched the Bible, shoving the ring further and praying for God to save us. At that very moment, we heard a gunshot! The robbers yelled in confusion as they rushed to their vehicles and fled, leaving us, by God’s miracle, unscathed.

I had always heard stories of the power of the Bible, and now I can truly attest to its magnificent power!
