The Other Side of the Fence

Have you heard the saying, “The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence”? Thinking about this statement, I begin to grasp the relevance of what it means.

I remember affectionately, more than twenty-two years ago now, my little grandson Jonathan seating himself on my knee for one of his favorite stories, “The Lost Sheep.” Eagerly, he would wait for the page to turn where the sheep wandered over the hill away from the flock. He understood the danger there, especially because of the hungry wolf.

How happy he was when the shepherd rescued that sheep.

Why, I asked myself, does one sheep leave the flock where there is plenty of grass, make a hole in the fence, and nibble the grass on the other side? Worse, why does it struggle through the fence only to find itself unable to get back? Yes, we know it is in danger of being hit by a car or even stolen. We can only hope the owner comes along and rescues it.

Adam and Eve lived in a beautiful garden with an abundance of food.

They knew the rules, but unfortunately, their fall into temptation in going beyond the boundaries brought suffering. Only the great love of God could provide a way of rescue through Jesus, who continues to offer salvation to those who have gone looking for “greener grass.” There is also the story of Samson, the one chosen to deliver the Israelites from their captivity under the Philistines. Samson left his territory, against his father’s counsel, and sought a wife who was heathen. He fell prey to disaster. The parable of the lost son tells of a young man bored with the routine of life, so he took his inheritance and headed for the free life.

Money has a habit of running out, and he soon realized home and father meant security. There are times when I think the grass looks greener on the other side, only to find myself in trouble. I am glad I have a Savior who guides me back to the security of my heavenly Father.

The only grass that will be greener on the other side will be when Jesus takes us to our heavenly home.
