DO THE WORK

Play/Pause Stop
David also said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you until all the work for the service of the temple of the LORD is finished.” —1 Chronicles 28:20

The priorities and projects of one generation are not always those of the next, but Solomon could not ignore the pressure—or the pile of building materials accumulating on the hilltop above the palace. For David, this was an expression of faithfulness to God, and the temple would be a witness to the surrounding nations. But he had his misgivings about Solomon undertaking such a large project: “My son Solomon is young and inexperienced” (1 Chronicles 22:5). David urged him not to be afraid or discouraged and to focus on God, who would be with him throughout this project. But Solomon also had to “do the work.” His trust in God would give him strength and courage, but he also had to apply himself, give it his time and energy, and do all that he could to ensure the project would be completed. Sometimes, the Bible’s “Do not be afraid” is about standing back and watching God remove or overcome the obstacle or challenge confronting us. But more often, “Do not be afraid” is the qualifier to step up and actually do the work. “Do not be afraid” is the command to do what is right, to do what needs to be done. Even if the outcome is uncertain, we can leave that in God’s hands.

“Do not be afraid” is an invitation to partner with God in all aspects of our life. The work we do is important and necessary, but it is always done within God’s realm and in His presence. That frees us both to work courageously and to trust in His power and provision.
