WHAT WE PLACE HOPE IN

Play/Pause Stop
Love the LORD, all his faithful people! The LORD preserves those who are true to him, but the proud he pays back in full. Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the LORD. —Psalm 31:23, 24

It has been said that we all have hope in something.

But the reality is that we place our hope in many things in different ways and to varying degrees. Many of these can be good in their right place, including our relationships, families, education, career or work, physical health and fitness, and even our church and community. While we spend much of our lives investing in different elements and aspects of our lives and the lives of others, from a human perspective, many of the things that we might find hope in will inevitably be put aside, let us down, or be lost with time and advancing age.

The challenge for finite human beings is to place our hope in something that will last beyond our lives. Ultimately, that “something” is found in God Himself.

According to David, putting our hope in the right thing is the true source of courage and strength. Hope in God is the one thing that endures, that does not have to change through the seasons of our lives, and that will not let us down.

So, how do we put our hope in the Lord, as David urged the faithful to do? As with other things in which we invest our lives, putting our hope in our God means that we give Him our time, energy, and focus. We re-order and reprioritize who we are and what we do, seeking God’s leading and purposes in all aspects of our lives.

Even when we are not fully certain of what this means, we begin with the small things we know to do. In itself, this requires courage, but it can also become a source of courage as we grow in our experience of God’s plan and provision for our lives of faith.
