Have a Gray Day

Play/Pause Stop
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! —Philippians 4:4, NIV

I am just going to come right out and say it: autocorrect has it in for me! It is true! I type, and it changes my correctly spelled words to something else.

Something that does not make sense. Something outright wrong! Recently, autocorrect has been playing a new game with me. Every time I type the word great, it changes it to gray. Today my autocorrect adventure left me with this sentence typed to my daughter who is away at college for the first time: “Have a gray day!” Autocorrect strikes again! Lord, help me! Of course, there is a spiritual parallel or two to examine here.

When we do our best to create something great in our day, relationships, and workplace, Satan steps in and changes our (often correct) actions into something gray.

What is a girl to do with all this gray? Philippians 4 is my go-to gray-day chapter. Verse 4 begins, “Rejoice in the Lord always.” And to add emphasis, it repeats, “Rejoice!” How can we rejoice, be happy, or be at peace when our great has been painted gray? Read on, sister. “Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near” (verse 5, NIV).

How much gray would be lifted by simply remembering that the Lord is nearby? Right here with us? In us? “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (verses 6, 7, NIV; emphasis added). In the gray moments, when our situation has been altered or when we have been wronged, let us not lose heart. Fix Satan’s autocorrect by remembering Philippians 4. Rejoice! Remember that God is present. Be gentle. Pray.

Rejoice. Claim God’s gift of peace, and turn the gray back to great in the power of the Lord. I pray He will paint His greatness over your grayness today.

Rejoice, my sister. Rejoice! (Read all of Philippians 4 for more instruction on how to keep your spirits up in challenging situations. The entire chapter is gold.)
