Cancer. Diabetes. Divorce. Money struggles.
Family relationships. Gas prices. Recently, there have been many opportunities for disappointment, distraction, confusion, and hopelessness.
Some years ago my friend Toni shared something inspiring about feathers. She told us that despite the burdens we go through, the Lord does not want us carrying even a featherweight of concern or worry. She asked, “Do you know how much a feather weighs?” Of course, we said, “Nothing! Feathers do not weigh anything!” She responded, “That’s right! Nothing!” This story has stayed with me for years, and I have had quite a few opportunities to share it with others. When I do, there have often been tears shed, then a sense of relief, and finally, an abiding peace. Some have shared stories of coming across a feather while working in their garden or in some unusual place. Another lady told me that after her sister passed away, she had chosen to keep a metal feather she had found among her belongings as a special memento.
She was not sure why at the time, but she said it felt like it was something meaningful. Many others have shared their stories of feathers with me.
Wow, Lord! This story has traveled from heart to heart, just like a feather floating on the breeze, moving beyond the original story I shared! If you are going through challenges of any kind today, here is an idea for you. Use any web browser to search for images of an outline of a feather or a coloring page of one. Print it out on card stock, if possible.
Print a few. Grab some crayons, coloring pencils, or watercolor paint, and decorate it. You can do this individually, with your family, or with a group.
Put it in a place where you will see it often, and when you are having one of those moments, this symbolism will remind you how much weight the Lord wants you to carry. His shoulders are strong and broad enough to bear any burdens or cares you have to give Him.
May your journey be light as a feather and filled with peace.
