Only God Can Satisfy My Soul

O God, listen to my cry! Hear my prayer! —Psalm 61:1, NLT

There are moments when we feel dejected, with everything in disarray. We feel isolated, discouraged, and depressed. It seems we are separated from God and blocked in by difficulties, and we cannot cope. We have the overwhelming impression that nobody understands us. If your heart is heavy or downcast today, hold on! Do not give up because God has a plan for your life. He will fulfill the promises He has made to you.

Psalm 61 reminds us that in times of distress, sorrow, pain, or discouragement when we come into the presence of God, our hearts become quiet.

We know that He is very close to us, and His presence reassures and comforts us. This psalm reminds us of something very important, something we sometimes forget: God is the only One who can satisfy our souls and grant us the peace, joy, and comfort that we so desperately need. He is listening as no other can. Sometimes our husbands, parents, and friends may not have time to listen because they are too busy to hear what our hearts want to share. Like us, they are human and may not be in the mood to be with us when we need them.

But God will always be there. He listens to our cries.

He feels our despair, pain, and sadness. Our Savior is with us—not sometimes—but all the time. And He can satisfy our souls if we believe in Him.

In the presence of God, we can say with the psalmist: I waited patiently for the LORD to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the LORD (Psalm 40:1–3, NLT).

When we seek God with all our hearts, whatever we may be facing in life, we will find peace on every level. As Isaiah reminds us, “The LORD’s arm is not too weak to save you, nor is his ear too deaf to hear you call” (Isaiah 59:1, NLT).

Surely, God will hear us, save us, and satisfy our souls.
