Just Happenstance?

Play/Pause Stop
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.”. . . “Alas, Sovereign LORD,” I said, “I do not know how to speak; I am too young.” —Jeremiah 1:5, 6, NIV

I grew up in the village of Kanye in Botswana.

As a little girl, I was hindered from discovering my talents because of shyness. Though I was a good student at school, I was too quiet to be recognized as anyone of note by my peers. It was only in my last two years of middle school that I realized I was a good athlete. In high school, I excelled in track and field competitions. Bit by bit, I discovered myself and grew from strength to strength as I served God and the people around me.

When I moved from Kanye to take up residence in the small mining town of Jwaneng, I thought I was only doing so to join my husband, who lived and worked there. I just happened to bring my niece, who was a Seventh-day Adventist, to come and stay with us in Jwaneng. A visiting pastor, Dr. Riley, came and preached in Jwaneng, and my niece invited me to go with her to listen to the sermons. Consequently, I ended up being baptized into the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Were those all just happenstances? What do you think? Now, instead of working simply to impress people, I am using my talents to serve God.

We sometimes tend to tell our Creator all about ourselves and nothing else. But remember, He created us. He was the One who formed us.

He knows all about us and what He can do through us. So when He says, “My daughter, I want you to go there and do this for Me,” it would be impudent for us to tell God what we believe we should do instead. We cannot tell Him anything He does not already know. Neither can we teach Him how to do His work. He reminds us that He knew us before we were formed in our mother’s womb. We would do well to inquire of Him for wisdom rather than try to tell Him what to do. So, my sister, you, too, have been gifted and blessed with unique talents. Whatever it is that you have been skeptical of doing, just try it and see what God will do for you. We each have a specific work to perform. We can do it in His strength and for His glory.

Do not ever doubt it!
