If you are acquainted with martial arts, you may have heard of the Japanese art of swordsmanship called iaido. This art is much more than simply learning how to draw a sword quickly and replace it in its scabbard. Preparation involves many years of developing both mental and physical fitness. It is about the ability to maintain a high state of awareness and how to quickly draw your sword in response to a sudden threat or attack. It may sound simple, but daily practice is the only way to achieve perfection. There would be no way to cultivate this readiness if one had a damaged or broken sword. The outcome would be disastrous.
As I thought about swords and preparation, I was reminded of the sixth chapter of Ephesians, where the armor of God is listed, and the sword is identified as the Word of God. Paul tells us that we must “take up the whole armor” in order to “be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand” (Ephesians 6:13, NKJV).
We are not fighting against normal human flesh and blood. Wrestling with spiritual enemies and rulers of darkness is no easy task. Most of the equipment listed—helmet, shield, breastplate, and shoes—protects the body from attack. However, the sword is the primary offensive weapon with which to charge against the enemy and defeat him.
I am reminded of another passage that states, Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, And a two-edged sword in their hand, To execute vengeance on the nations, And punishments upon the people (Psalm 149:6, 7, NKJV). There are people who believe that only the Old Testament is relevant today. Then there are some Christians who believe the New Testament should be their only scriptural focus. In effect, they are going into battle with a broken sword. They are not fully equipped and will face a tragic outcome.
The two testaments are both needed if we are to be ready to do battle with a two-edged sword. Jesus is foreshadowed in every book of the Bible, and we need to study the Bible daily, as a whole, to be fully prepared for battle with the satanic enemy.
As we are confronted on every side by evil, let us be sure to study all of God’s Word, praising Him for the victorious power it contains.
