Let Him In

Play/Pause Stop
Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. —Proverbs 3:5, 6, NLT

I watched his little legs propel him forward; his eagerness to cross the busy street was plain to see. He paid no attention to oncoming traffic, and his tail shook his body as he strutted confidently across the street, unaware of the dangers around him.

Lucky for him, the car that had just turned the corner and was heading for him was driven by an alert and considerate driver. This driver, seeing the little pup happily and foolishly crossing the street with no care for or knowledge of the danger he was in, slowed to a crawl and gave him enough time to get safely to the other side of the street.

I watched him from my parked car. He was a cutie indeed, and he seemed to smile with contentment at his great accomplishment.

As he disappeared safely into a yard, I smiled, realizing his innocence and cluelessness regarding the dangers he had just escaped. While driving home, I thought about this little four-legged creature as the lessons he had just provided came to mind.

How many times have I run headlong through life, intent on my own agenda? How many times had God’s guardian angels saved me from perils that I had created by my own actions? So often, we are guilty of making decisions and choices in life without consulting the Author and Finisher of our faith. It can be easy to notice this type of behavior in others—in my daughter and granddaughter—but do I recognize the habit in myself? The wise man says in our text for today that if we acknowledge God in all our ways, He will direct our paths. Oh, that we would follow this counsel and allow God to direct our decisions, even the ones we think are inconsequential. Our God longs so deeply to be a part of our lives, and we fool ourselves by thinking He is too busy to be interested in our daily lives. When we fail to seek Him for wisdom in making the little decisions, we neglect to turn to Him for the big ones. That is how we run into danger, sometimes knowingly but often unknowingly. My friends, let us not give our guardian angels unnecessary work. Let us acknowledge God in every aspect of our lives, seeking Him for wisdom as we make each decision. Let us do it today, and He will take us safely through.
