Encourage Each Other

And when they give the book to one who cannot read, saying, “Read this,” he says, “I cannot read.” —Isaiah 29:12, ESV

Young Vasantha was illiterate. She could not even sign her own name. Whenever she went to the market to buy groceries, she was cheated by unscrupulous shopkeepers. She felt she was more of a hindrance than a blessing to her family.

More than anything, Vasantha longed to learn how to read and write. She was determined to do so. Her first experience in literacy class was very embarrassing. She knew absolutely nothing. She could not recognize even a single letter or word.

To reassure her, I placed my hands around her and said, “Vasantha, don’t worry. You will read one day.” I encouraged her to keep attending class every day.

The Literacy Center offers more than learning how to read and write. Students are taught how to do simple arithmetic and other skills, such as preparing healthy meals and making wire baskets, paper flowers, and embroidery. They can also attend health talks and exercise classes. These activities encourage the women, and it is wonderful to watch as they become more hopeful and begin taking an interest in life. One day Vasantha mentioned she was waiting to be asked to read the Scriptures in church and how much she would love to sing like other women. Once again, I encouraged her to pray about it and to trust in the Lord for His wisdom. At the end of the year, by God’s grace, Vasantha was able to read the Word of God.

All praises to Him! Once she became literate, she joined the government-sponsored Women’s Self-Help group in her village. She thrived, eventually becoming the leader of that group. In that role, she often goes to the bank, where she signs for the salaries of her group members. The bank manager was amazed to see the transformation in this once shy young woman. Vasantha credits God. I am grateful for the role I was privileged to play at the Literacy Center. I give all the glory and honor to the Lord for shaping Vasantha into a wonderful mother, a blessed wife, and a valuable member of society. We are blessed whenever we help make a difference in someone’s life. Is there someone who needs your help today?
