Trying to Make Sense of My Life

Play/Pause Stop
Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. —Proverbs 3:5, 6, NLT

Sometimes things happen in our lives that do not seem right at all.

I do not know about you, but I wonder why.

“Why me?” On those days, I just want to run and hide and get away from the world, but I cannot. So, instead, I go for a walk, most often at night when no one can see me crying or upset. And that is where I talk with Christ about what is going on in my life.

You see, I have a hard time with people who lie and also with people who are unkind to others who are less fortunate. This is especially true of people who treat children with disdain and hatefulness. Children are a gift from Christ, and they are only children for a little while. If we do not treat them with love and kindness, we will lose them, and they will not want to follow Jesus but will go in the wrong direction and follow Satan.

So, on one of those walks, I asked the Lord to talk with me and give me a sign that He was near and could hear me. Some really cool things have happened since then. I felt the desperation leave, and happiness flooded my soul. I felt the anger leave as joy entered.

As I walk around the campus where I live, God has shown me many different nighttime animals: a very big toad, a fruit bat, and a small owl that watched me and did not fly away as I rounded the corner. God pointed out the moon and many awesome stars.

My nightly walks ground me and help me in my daily walk with Christ. When life does not make sense, it is mostly because we do not understand our circumstances. Remember, Solomon tells us not to lean on our own understanding because our understanding is limited. We do not get to see things from God’s perspective. We do not get to see God’s plan and purpose in our lives from the beginning to the end. That is why we must simply trust that God has a plan and a purpose for everything we encounter. If we acknowledge that God is with us in the good times and the bad times, He will see us through. My prayer for each of us is that we will trust God with our lives and have the faith to live as Jesus wishes us to.

We can, in His strength, even when life does not seem to make sense.
