No Worries—God Is Near

Play/Pause Stop
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. —Philippians 4:6, 7, NKJV

Just the mention of the word dentist and the escalated phrase dental appointment immediately increase my heart palpitations. I am flooded with thoughts of “what if ?” A feeling of helplessness overcomes me whenever I find myself situated in the dentist’s chair, surrounded by the dentist, the assistant, and a table of sharp, shiny metal tools.

At my last appointment, I was anything but calm as I sat, waiting for it all to begin. However, this dental appointment, unbeknown to me at first, would be different—a difference that would forever change my perspective. Close to where I was seated was a large window that looked outside. As my attention became more focused on this scene, a revelation of God’s love and His longing for us not to worry began to emerge, like the opening of a movie. I did not realize how long I had been focusing on the blue sky and how quiet my spirit had become. God had been preparing me for His message of love that would cast out my fear of dental worries—and life’s worries. Suddenly, I saw a bird appear, flying with outspread wings in large, circular movements into and then out of my view. I mused, This is so interesting. Usually, there is a companion. But all I could see was just this one bird. Then, right in front of my eyes, there appeared a second bird flying a distance from the first bird. You see, the first bird had never been alone. These two birds, while flying in and out of view, beyond what I could see through the window, were always there for each other. As my mind became more intrigued, a third bird joined the group. They all flew equal distances from each other but always close to one another. What a lesson of love! It completely cast from my mind not only my dental worries but also all of the many worries of life that I carried—cares and anxieties that often bring tears to my eyes and cloud my mind from God’s goodness. Now I could hear His still, small voice speaking to my heart, “No worries, child. I am with you always, and I will see you through.” Let us choose to guard our hearts and minds through God’s peace today.
