My husband and I were living in the city of Loveland, Colorado, United States of America, in a comfortable home in a quiet neighborhood.
We had loved our previous home in the foothills with acreage but desired to become debt-free so had made this move. While visiting my dear friend who lived in a rural setting with a large garden, I noticed a home across their field that had a large storage garage with seven bays. I thought of my husband’s passion for restoring old cars and trucks and thought how he would love to have an outbuilding like that. A couple of years later, on our way to my friend’s home, I saw there was a garage sale at the home I had noticed.
We decided to stop and check out what they had.
As my husband talked to the elderly owner, I felt a whisper in my ear saying, “Just ask him!” I handed my quarter to the gentleman for my small purchase, and then, smiling broadly, I looked him in the eye and said, “Would you also sell me your home?” I do not know who looked more surprised, my husband or the old gentleman! We were not looking for a new home; in fact, we were so happy with our current location, we thought it would be our forever home! The gentleman surprised me by saying, “It has recently crossed my mind that we may need to start downsizing.” Before we left, I gave him our name and number and did not think much more about it. Over a year later, I was surprised to receive a message from him, asking if we were still interested in his home! We quickly set up a time to tour their place. As we walked the acreage, we talked about how perfectly the home and property met our needs. With some negotiation, we were able to agree to a purchase price.
The Lord knew what we needed way before we did.
The very next year the 2013 Colorado floods totally wiped away my in-law’s home, leaving them homeless. Our new place had a lovely extra suite where they could live while we arranged to build a private mother-in-law apartment attached to our home.
We have been so thankful to have them close where we could enjoy them and care for them as they aged. God provided far beyond our expectations.
