My husband and I stepped out into the refreshingly crisp, dew-filled morning air. A light breeze caressed my face. It felt so good to be walking.
This had become our favorite time of the day.
Walking two miles each morning set an invigorating start for the rest of the day, and we felt stronger. Exercise is stimulating and is known for many benefits to the body and mind. It increases circulation, which results in an increased heart rate, strengthens the lungs, stimulates the immune system, and lifts the mood, to name just a few benefits.
Walking up the first slope caused me to slow down a little to catch my breath, and that’s when I noticed a bird. We saw it was flying with something in its bill. “Breakfast,” I said to my husband. “Well, you know the saying,” he said. “The early bird catches the worm.” This was not a worm but a chunk of food. We thought it might be taking food to a nest to feed its babies. As we followed the bird in flight, we observed it perch on a sawn-off tree trunk and place whatever it had in its beak on the stump. “Look,” I said, “he even has a table.” The bird continued to eat his food off the stump. My husband and I marveled as the scene unfolded in front of us. The bird was using the tree stump as its table. God had provided the bird with food and even a table on which to comfortably perch and eat. We simultaneously began to quote Psalm 23, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. . . . Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over” (verses 1–5, KJV). How comforting! The God who provides for the sparrows can certainly provide for me. Today, I am counting the many ways God has supplied everything I need.
I invite you to join me in doing the same.
How many blessings can we number? What amazing things has He done in supplying our daily necessities? How will we praise Him today?
