Sheltered in His Hands

Play/Pause Stop
Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation. —Isaiah 12:2, NIV

I arrived at the park for my usual morning walk.

The wind began to blow, causing my hair to whip across my face. The usually calm waters alongside the jetty began to ripple.

The wind seemed to start with a whisper, then it grew into more like a gentle swish, and then it slapped at the water as it began to pick up speed.

Though it looked like rain was in the forecast, I did not feel particularly concerned at that point. I thought the strong winds would blow the dark clouds, heavy with rain, far away. As I reached the hilltop, I glanced toward my right and noticed the sky had begun to pour its contents onto the other side of the shore. I broke out into a jog, not wanting to be caught in a heavy downpour. Still, I knew I had time to reach the parking lot where I had left my car. On the last leg of the route to the parking lot, I noticed an elderly man walking ahead of me. He strolled unhurriedly. Walking slowly and steadily, he occasionally looked at the newspaper in his hand. He was not at all concerned about the impending rain nor bothered by the dark clouds which loomed above him. On closer inspection, I noticed an umbrella hooked over his arm. I realized that because he was prepared for the incoming rain, he had no reason to feel perturbed by the weather—unlike myself and many others who were scrambling to reach the safety of our cars, away from the incoming downpour. We had been caught unprepared.

Experience tells us that being ready for the unexpected gives us confidence. However, even our best preparation provides no guarantee that we will sail smoothly through life’s challenges. How encouraging to realize that while we may not know what the future holds, we know Someone greater than ourselves who knows everything about us.

We can trust God in whatever lies ahead, for we are assured that we are in good hands. We do not need to scramble or run for shelter in the storms of life because we know we can walk safely in the shelter of God’s hands. We can walk in confidence knowing that God is our protector, strength, and salvation. The Lord Himself is our strength and defense.

Be blessed today as you walk in the shelter of God’s hand.
