Years ago, I decided to memorize as many of God’s promises as I could. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I have ever made.
Whenever trials assail me, David reminds me, “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust” (Psalm 18:2, NKJV). James challenges me to consider a heavenly perspective when he states, “Count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience” (James 1:2, 3, NKJV). And when I am feeling completely overwhelmed by the challenges of life, God promises, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned” (Isaiah 43:2, NKJV). Making a major decision can be difficult. I am grateful for the reminder found in Philippians that assures me, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6, 7, NKJV). We do not have to feel intimidated by the future. “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11, NKJV). When house repairs or other unexpected expenses loom, I do not panic, for “my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19, NKJV). Moreover, He has promised, “Before they call, I will answer; and while they are still speaking, I will hear” (Isaiah 65:24, NKJV). Jesus walked on the earth and was tempted—just like us. But, praise God, “no temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it” (1 Corinthians 10:13, NKJV). These are some of the promises I regularly claim. I am sure you have a similar list. My friends, let us memorize God’s Word while we are privileged to have our Bibles with us.
