Seasonal Plums

Play/Pause Stop
O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. —Psalm 34:8, KJV Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. —Hebrews 13:8, KJV

A couple of years ago, my sister-in-law and I were shopping at one of the wholesale clubs for snack items for church. She picked up some plums as one of the items to place in the snack bags that Sabbath. At church, after she passed out the bags, she handed me a plum and told me I had to try one, as they were delicious. She was right.

They were so good that I made a trip to the wholesale club to buy a bag for myself. These particular plums were only available, per the label, for about two to three weeks each year. I made a mental note to be sure to buy some the next year.

Fast-forward, and my, how a year does fly by, to mid-August, when I went on “plum watch.” After adding it to my calendar, I started to check the store for the plums. I had told others about these plums, so they were waiting too. I stopped by the store a couple of times and noted they were not yet in stock. Then, in early September, I was so excited to see they had arrived! While still in the store, I texted everyone to let them know the plums had arrived. I could hardly wait to get home and enjoy a delicious treat. Once home, I washed a plum and bit into it. Yuck! That was not what I had enjoyed the previous year. The skin was bitter, and the flesh had no taste. Since there were two varieties, I concluded we must have bought the other variety last year, so I returned to the store the next day to try that one. Oh, how disappointed I was to discover that those were not good either. I had waited a whole year to enjoy those delicious plums, only to be badly let down. I refused to spend any more money looking for the sweet plums I had previously enjoyed. Nothing was wasted, though, as I shared the fruit with my family and my church family. Reflecting on my “plum watch,” I felt thankful to know that Jesus is always the same—yesterday, today, and forever. He never changes. He is always available.

He invites us to taste and see how good He is, and He will never disappoint. I look forward to heaven, where the fruit will be unlike anything I have experienced on earth. It will be available throughout eternity and will taste the same each time I enjoy it. I cannot wait!
