A Basketful of Sour Lemons

Play/Pause Stop
Though I have fallen, I will rise. Though I sit in darkness, the Lord will be my light. —Micah 7:8, NIV

They say that when life gives you lemons, you should make lemonade, but that is easier said than done. Life is hard, and change is not always understood and processed easily. Up until a number of years ago, I did not know what depression really was.

But this changed quickly when I found myself trapped in a low-paying, pointless job. My employer had promised that I could continue to work while they sponsored me to study. But things changed, and it became impossible for me to study and continue with my existing job. I was offered a different job, but it was not suitable for me.

Each day I would drive to work crying and praying. It was hell. But God visited me! One day, I noticed a pigeon that seemed to be following me while I was stuck in traffic. It swept down in front of my car and onto my windshield. It continued to hover above my car until I reached my workplace, where I saw it rest on a lamppost. It then turned and looked in my direction for a moment. I felt God was telling me, “I feel your pain. I care for you deeply.” I decided to resign and take time off to look after myself. My son was going through a difficult time in school, too, and was at home sometimes. So I thought it would do him good to have me around the house. I wanted to look after both of us. It was indeed a painful time, and I felt surrounded by darkness and all alone. I would wake up in the middle of the night and talk to God. I took time to pray, fast, read, and meditate. Singing and praise became part of my every moment. My days and nights were merged into a long conversation with God.

He became my only trusted friend! Micah 7:8 brought me such comfort and light. Despite the darkness, God showered me with His grace, and I saw a glimpse of His beautiful character of love. Then, in a miraculous manner, I found a better job.

Looking back, I recognize how this experience strengthened my faith and renewed my courage in the Lord. If you are going through difficult times today, I would like to say to you, walk closely with the Lord. He will not let you down. He will turn your basket of sour lemons into sweet and refreshing lemonade you can share with others!
