Fear. We have all experienced it.
To a greater or lesser degree, we know how fear can stun and numb us, leaving us feeling crippled. But fear is not always a bad thing.
Sometimes it can help protect us from something that could put life or integrity in danger. Even with this realization, however, it is still true that fear never feels good or pleasant. Fear haunted Abram and Sarai as they became elderly and had no children to leave their fortunes to. Their lack of legitimate heirs weighed on their hearts every day.
Sarai was now old and had been barren even as a young bride. In her old age, she knew beyond any doubt she would never conceive.
Abram, too, had lost hope of becoming a father. Who would carry on their lineage? To whom would they leave their wealth? They were bitterly disappointed. Even though he had nephews and faithful servants who were like sons, Abram longed to have a son of his own. Had God not promised to make him the father of many nations? But time passed, age advanced, and still, the promised blessing did not come.
Abram learned to come to terms with his disappointment and fear. However, he served the God of the impossible, and for Him, no barriers are too difficult to overcome. God knows no haste or delay. He who promised is faithful.
The Lord blessed Sarai, and she became pregnant at the age of ninety and gave birth to a beautiful little boy whom they named Isaac.
Can you imagine how they must have glowed with joy? The promise had been fulfilled. God changed their names to Abraham and Sarah and turned their disillusion into joy and laughter. Abraham and Sarah experienced the good and perfect will of God. In this world, we still feel the losses and consequences of being part of a creation that has been degenerated by evil. But Jesus continues to lead His children. He defends and protects His people and will do so until He comes to take us home. When we allow the Lord to be our shield, we never need to fear. Remember, God is faithful! He is all-powerful. We have nothing to fear with God on our side.
