Holding On to Faith in the Storm

My world upended when my six-month-old baby, usually full of energy and joy, suddenly became gravely ill. No matter what I tried, I could not soothe his cries of pain. After I rushed him to the Adventist Medical Center in Manila, Philippines, the doctors delivered a horrifying diagnosis: ileocolic intussusception. This means that part of his intestine had folded into itself, causing a life-threatening blockage. They informed us he needed immediate surgery. The overwhelming fear and helplessness I felt at that moment were indescribable. My heart was crushed with excruciating pain. As my husband and I watched our little boy being wheeled into surgery, the gravity of the situation hit us hard. All we could do was pray—we had no other choice. I vividly remember holding my husband’s hand as we knelt and prayed desperately, pleading with God to guide the surgeons and heal our son. At that moment I felt an urgent need to place all my trust in God. This experience profoundly deepened my faith and allowed me to connect with the promise in Psalm 147:3 that God heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. As we waited anxiously during the two-and-a-half-hour surgery, that promise resonated within me like never before. Our Christian faith teaches us to cling to God during difficult times, believing He sees our pain and is working out everything for our good.

This experience reinforced my belief in the power of prayer, especially during times of crisis. We believe God is not distant but actively involved in our lives.

As I prayed for my son’s recovery, this conviction served as my anchor. It was no longer just about asking for a miracle; it was about surrendering to God’s will, trusting that His plan is perfect even when we cannot understand it.

Miraculously, my son’s surgery was successful, and he began to recover. Today he is healthy and strong, a testament to God’s mercy.

This experience strengthened my belief that God is always with us, even in our darkest moments. He hears our prayers and is faithful to bring healing and comfort in His perfect time. Reflecting on that difficult time reminds me that faith is crucial, especially during life’s storms. No matter how intense the storm is, we can find peace and strength by holding on to God’s promises—regardless of the outcome.
