Growing in Jesus

Play/Pause Stop
So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. —Colossians 2:6, 7, NIV

Do you remember the first time you experienced Jesus? What were your feelings? Were you overwhelmed with joy and peace? Was your heart filled with thankfulness for His grace and mercy? Oh! I know it must have been a beautiful experience. Even now, as I think about my own experience, my heart is stirred with emotion.

When David was going through a difficult time, the Bible says that he “found strength in the Lord his God” (1 Samuel 30:6, NIV). When others were seeking to take his life, David turned to his God. He had seen the Lord’s leading in his life.

In fact, God says of him, “I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will” (Acts 13:22, KJV).

When we read the Scriptures, we see that David’s walk with God was not an easy one. He had many ups and downs spiritually. He experienced great highs and deep lows, but through it all David never gave up his faith in God. When he was confronted with his sin, David humbled himself before God. He continued to walk with God in humility, learning each day more and more from God. He was like a “tree planted by water . . . [that] does not cease to bear fruit” (Jeremiah 17:8, ESV). What can we learn from David’s example? It is simple to say but difficult to live out. But it is not impossible, for as Paul says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13, NKJV). We are to grow daily in Christ.

As we read the Scriptures and root ourselves in them, as we drink the living waters and quench our thirst for righteousness, we grow in Christ. As we practice our faith daily, our hearts will be filled with thankfulness, for we will see God’s mercy and grace at work in our lives, transforming and strengthening us in ways that will honor Him and encourage others. Dear Father, thank You so much for the mercy You show us daily.

We want to grow daily in Your ways.

We long to be rooted in our faith and for our hearts to overflow with thankfulness and praise. Amen.
