Fix Your Thoughts

Play/Pause Stop
Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. —Philippians 4:8, NLT

Philippians 4:8 is the text I read on the daily calendar my sister gave me many years ago. The pages show evidence of how much it has been used.

Many times, my damp hands have flipped the pages where the calendar sits in my kitchen window above the sink. It is not only helpful to keep track of the date but also filled with encouragement. Printed below the verse are the words, “When counting my blessings, I hardly know where to begin! Give me a thankful heart this day. Amen.” I liked it so much that I took a picture of it yesterday and thought I would send it to my sister.

After my morning worship today, I walked into the kitchen, and when I saw the calendar, I remembered I had not sent the picture to Margie.

Immediately I got my phone out and sent it to her.

A few minutes later my sister called to say she had received the picture, but it was too small for her to read. She recognized it was the calendar she had given to me, and after I read the verse to her, we shared several blessings we had experienced during the week and so many things for which we were thankful. Throughout the day I noticed even more things for which to be thankful. In the evening, I received a phone call from her daughter.

She said that my sister had fallen and they were on the way to the emergency room. Before we prayed we recounted again everything we were grateful for—including the circumstances of the fall. Time passes slowly while you wait for news.

I wondered how serious the injury was and whether or not Margie would be admitted to the hospital. I remembered how it had slipped my mind to send her the picture the day before, and I was so glad I had sent it earlier in the day.

Would we have remembered all the things we were thankful for as they were driving to the hospital if we had not? I do not know.

David reminds us, Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You. In God (I will praise his word), In God I have put my trust (Psalm 56:3, 4, NKJV).

Eleven hours later, after a peaceful night’s sleep, I received a text: “Sorry we were so wrapped up I forgot to text. She’s pretty banged up. No broken bones or ribs! She’s a lucky lady.” May we be mindful of His presence each day and praise Him for all His blessings.
