Who Can Find a Virtuous Woman?

Play/Pause Stop
Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. —Proverbs 31:10, KJV

I believe the Holy Spirit inspired the description of womanhood in Proverbs 31:10–31 not only as a magnificent poem but to provide us with instruction and inspiration. Let us take a closer look at what the Lord wants us to learn through the counsel given to King Lemuel by his mother. This longest scriptural statement on womanhood begins with a question and suggests that the one who discovers a woman like this will have really struck it rich. Rubies are among the most valuable and costly of precious stones—and the virtuous woman’s value is listed as being far above rubies. Only wisdom is accorded equal value in the Scriptures, leading us to infer that this woman was also wise. Virtue is not a commonly used word, so what does it mean? It is defined as “a trait of excellence. . . . A disposition to choose actions that succeed in showing high moral standards. . . . When someone takes pleasure in doing what is right, even when it is difficult or initially unpleasant, they can establish virtue as a habit.”* A virtuous woman is wise, kind, clothed with dignity and strength. She is a comfort and encouragement to those around her. She loves God and her fellow men and is a blessing to many.

Every woman who has walked with God has a story to tell.

From Sarah we learn that nothing is too difficult for God. Hagar teaches us that even in the desert, God is there. Rahab shows us that God can use anyone for any purpose. Ruth tells us that it is not over until God says it is over.

Esther shares that God can transform an unworthy person into a queen. The woman with the issue of blood teaches that when all has failed, God never fails.

Mary and Martha tell us that death can be changed into life. And from Dorcas we learn that God never forgets what we do for others.

My dear sisters, it is our privilege to walk with God and become virtuous women. When we walk with the Lord, we, too, will have a story to share with others. We are living in the last days. We do not know when our mighty God will come to this world to take us to our heavenly home. We must be ready and invite others to be ready to meet Him in the clouds of heaven. May God bless you, your families, and your churches.
