After some rained-out camping trips, my husband and I bought a little used trailer. It was to be our home away from home, and we enjoyed camping in it many times. We also used it when an overflow of company came. Our son even lived in it for a couple of summers during his academy years. One memorable night, the trailer was shaken like a leaf by a blowing gale. We had to get out of bed and tow our trailer farther away from the wild Atlantic shore. A thick tree thicket provided a sheltered, safer spot. Eventually it became an extra bedroom when we acquired a cottage on Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick, Canada.
After several years we were ready to retire it, and a neighbor bought it to use as a playroom for his grandchildren. By then the trailer had reached a ripe old age. One day we were surprised to see our little trailer being hauled out of the neighbor’s yard.
The owner shouted, “Say goodbye to your trailer. Its new life will be as a chicken coop.” I felt a little sad to see the end of my trailer but grateful for the many happy memories it provided. As I thought about my little trailer, I was reminded of my Christian walk. I began as a curious seeker. My search took me through many experiences.
The more I learned, the more I needed to find answers. The library, various pastors, several versions of the Bible, and fellow young Christians all played a part in my walk with the Lord, so much like my camping experiences.
Whether I was camping in my woods, on an ocean beach, or finally at my little cottage, I learned many things. The more we camp, the better we become at camping. The more time I spend with the Lord, the greater my understanding of God’s plan for me. During my camping years I went to many spots and experienced the fun of raccoons peeking in my trailer windows, deer walking quietly past the trailer, and many quiet hours of listening to birds, blowing whales, and the sounds and scents of the breezes. As my adventure with God changes my life, I am becoming a seasoned believer. I have a peace in my heart that I never knew was possible. I have learned that my faith is a free walk with Jesus—no campground fees, no planning needed. As I turn my thoughts heavenward, my faith grows. How I long for the day He will welcome His children home to the new earth.
