I am convinced that angels come in many guises.
One summer my daughter and I enjoyed time together camping at a lovely campsite. Toward the end of the week, I needed to pick up a few things from the local supermarket. It was not far from the campsite, so I knew I would not be gone for long.
I asked my daughter if she would like to come along with me, but she declined. She wanted to stay and hang out with her friends. I was slightly surprised but brushed it off as just being one of those things. After all, camping is about making and enjoying new friends. I had not gone far down the road when I noticed a little red sports car in my rearview mirror. As I turned off the traffic circle, he began to flash his headlights at me furiously.
I could not imagine why, but I pulled over to the side of the road. Uncertain of what he could want, I got out of my car and walked the few yards back toward him. Though I do not remember his exact words, he told me that he had seen flames coming out from underneath my car. I remembered I had a gas canister for camping in the trunk of my car! I told the stranger, and he quickly ran to my car and removed it.
We stood back and watched the car go up in flames. It was a terrifying experience. Once the fire had burned out and the situation had settled down, the man drove me back to the campsite. There I notified the necessary authorities and made the necessary arrangements to have the car moved. In all the activity I had forgotten the stranger.
I quickly turned around to look for him, but he was nowhere in sight. He had gone, and I had not even thanked him! You might think anyone would do the same as the man in the red sports car had done if they noticed a car in some sort of trouble, but that is not necessarily true. To this day two things stand out clearly in my mind.
The fact that my daughter decided to stay with friends was unusual for her, but how glad I was she was not in the car with me.
The second thing was that despite almost no traffic on the country road that day, there was a car behind me at just the right time.
So was he an angel, or was it God’s provision? I believe that sometimes those are one and the same thing.
