The Scar

Play/Pause Stop
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. —Psalm 147:3, NKJV

For a Christian, scars can be a reminder of God’s providence and grace. Yes, God’s grace and providence are inseparable, and we can have scars that give evidence He has worked all things together for our good. Several years ago I was admitted to the Southern Philippines Medical Center in Davao City with a heart problem.

I was diagnosed with severe aortic stenosis, and my cardiologist told me open heart surgery was my only option. Aortic stenosis is a congenital heart disease that is asymptomatic in younger people. It surfaces when the aortic valve narrows and blood cannot flow normally. A normal heart has three divisions in the valves. Mine had only two.

At first I felt hesitant to undergo such a major procedure. For my family and me, it was a big deal to make such a decision because we knew the outcome was uncertain. We prayed so hard, asking God for intervention, for a miracle to happen.

I remembered that God performed miracles in Bible times, and I felt sure He could still do the same in our time because He is the God who sees and hears, and nothing is too difficult for Him. He promised, “For with God nothing shall be impossible” (Luke 1:37, KJV). I claimed God’s promises in the Bible to give me hope, courage, and strength. I submitted to whatever His plans for me might be. He reminded me, “Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10, NKJV). I held on to this promise as I was brought to the operating room, fully entrusting my life to Him, casting everything into His care.

Twenty-four hours after my surgery, I had not gained consciousness and was bleeding internally. They reopened my heart to save me, and after the second procedure was done, I regained consciousness after being in a coma for three days.

Today I am back to work, serving the Lord at Southeastern Philippine Union Mission as Women’s Ministries and Family Life director.

Every time I see the scar on my chest, it reminds me of God’s providence and saving grace. My scar is a testimony to His goodness.
