Channels of Light and Blessings

I knocked and entered her room, where she sat in the hospital recliner, post-operative, day one. I introduced myself, but she barely looked at me.

There was such sadness about her.

Was it from the surgery? I wondered.

She was scheduled to be discharged the next day.

Why is she so sad? I went over her plan of care for the night and inquired about her expectations. She had none except to be left alone.

I returned to her room with her scheduled medications and offered her some apple juice with which to take her pills. She was thankful and took her medication. I could still feel sadness in her as I made her comfortable and inquired if she needed anything else. “No,” she said. “I’m fine.” Before I knew it, it was five o’clock, thank the Lord! The night had passed without any incidents. As I entered the sad lady’s room for the last time, I saw she was awake. She said had slept well, and her pain level was good. She allowed me to assist with her basic needs, and I made her comfortable in the recliner.

She took her morning medications.

As I sat across from her, the room felt so peaceful.

She looked at me and very quietly said, “My son.” Then everything came tumbling out. Her heart was in such pain. I held her hands and allowed her to purge her soul. When she was done, I shared the love of Jesus with her and told her of His wonderful promises. I prayed and committed both her and her son to our loving Jesus. Smiling, she apologized for the previous night. I smiled in return and told her God had a sense of humor in allowing us to meet. Sometimes our pain causes us to miss opportunities to point others to Christ.

When we commit ourselves to God, He will place us where we can glorify Him. Everyone who is connected to God will impart light to others. If there are any who have no light to give, it is because they have no connection with the Source of Light. . . . God has appointed His children to give light to others. . . . We have been called out of darkness into His marvelous light, in order that we may show forth the praises of Christ.”* May we allow the Holy Spirit to use us as channels of light, pointing others to Christ, who is the Source of Light and peace. All for His glory and praise!
