Missing Socks

Play/Pause Stop
“He will turn the hearts of the fathers back to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers.” —Malachi 4:6, NASB

One of my most frustrating and tedious chores is to sit with a pile of socks, still warm from the dryer, hoping to match each pair. It baffles me.

We put pairs of socks in the washing machine but something mysterious seems to happen between when we put them in the washing machine and when they are taken out of the dryer. Even with them tied together, they still manage to wriggle free and go missing. What happens to them during the washing and drying cycles? My challenge is to unite the pairs. The sorting begins by separating them according to color.

Blues, browns, blacks, and whites are all placed in their respective piles. Then they are sorted by the matching patterns and details. I keep sorting and matching until I find each pair. It is so satisfying to find the first pair and then the next, until all the pairs are reunited. When they are all matched, I feel a burst of joy that none were missing.

The simple experience of sorting socks and finding their match reminds me of a time when we will be reunited with our loved ones.

Parents who were separated from their children, siblings who were separated from each other, and friends who have lost contact with each other will eventually be reunited. What a celebration that will be! Are you in a situation where you have been separated from a loved one, for whatever reason? It may have dragged on for years.

Do you have a loved one, a colleague, or a friend you have not heard from in a long time? I encourage you to reach out to them.

Ask the Lord for wisdom, tact, a tender heart, and courage to take that first step. I pray you will experience joy over a relationship restored.

Dear Lord and Father, healer of all broken relationships, thank You today for searching and finding me, for the joy of a relationship with You, and for Your tenderness and love. Give me the strength and tact needed to reach out to the person You have placed on my heart. May we both feel the joy that a mended relationship can bring.

Lord, we all look forward to the time when we will be reunited with You. Dear Savior, may it be soon. We long for You to take us home.
