Psalm 72: A Psalm for Solomon

Play/Pause Stop
Give the king thy judgments, O God, and thy righteousness unto the king’s son. —Psalm 72:1

Psalm 72 is a psalm we may safely place at the beginning of Solomon’s reign and the end of David’s life. It “was probably composed by David for his son Solomon on his accession to the throne, as an incentive to consecrated rulership. It breathes the spirit of David’s last words, as recorded in 2 Sam. 23:1–5.” Psalm 72 depicts a king whose decisions accord with the will of the Lord. He judges the people justly and impartially.

As a result, there is peace in the land (vv. 1–3).

Verses 3–6 are applicable to the Messiah, the King of Righteousness, the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6; Hebrews 7:2). “He shall judge the poor of the people, he shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor. They shall fear thee as long as the sun and moon endure, throughout all generations. He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass: as showers that water the earth” (Psalm 72:4–6).

“Glorious are the promises made to David and his house, promises that look forward to the eternal ages, and find their complete fulfillment in Christ.” The King of kings shall rule over the entire earth (vv. 8–10), and all kings shall bow down before Him (v. 11).

All will bow before Him for He is merciful and just (vv. 11, 12).

He will protect the needy and poor (vv. 12, 13).

He will not let the blood of the innocent go without punishment.

“Never is the tempest-tried soul more dearly loved by his Saviour than when he is suffering reproach for the truth’s sake.” Prosperity will abound within the kingdom (vv. 15, 16). “His name shall endure for ever: his name shall be continued as long as the sun: and men shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed” (v. 17).

Here is a description of the Messiah as King of kings (Matthew 25:31).

Psalm 72:18, 19 is a doxology that closes this section of the Psalms.

“Deep are His counsels, and unknown, / But grace and truth support His throne; / Though gloomy clouds His way surround, / Justice is their eternal ground.”
