Psalm 150: Hallelujah—Everything With Breath Praise God!

Play/Pause Stop
Praise ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power. Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness. —Psalm 150:1, 2

Psalm 150, the final Hallelujah psalm, calls all living beings to raise a song of praise to the great Jehovah! All heaven and earth are called to praise the Lord (v. 1).

Praise God for “his excellent greatness” (v. 2).

Praise God on a myriad of instruments.

Praise Him with the shofar, the psaltery, and the harp (v. 3).

Praise Him with “the timbrel and with dance” (v. 4).

“Praise him with stringed instruments and organs” (v. 5).

Praise Him with “loud cymbals,” with “high sounding cymbals” (v. 5).

The psalm ends with David imploring everything that has breath to praise the Lord (v. 6)! “With one final grand ‘hallelujah’ . . . the greatest book of songs ever composed, closes. In the great audience chamber of the psalms, where our hearts have thrilled with many soul-stirring choruses, we rise and stand in reverence as the great symphony reaches its climax. We would fain join our voices in the last great ‘hallelujah’ to the Lamb.” “The melody of praise is the atmosphere of heaven; and when heaven comes in touch with the earth there is music and song—‘thanksgiving, and the voice of melody.’ “Above the new-created earth, as it lay, fair and unblemished, under the smile of God, ‘the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy.’ So human hearts, in sympathy with heaven, have responded to God’s goodness in notes of praise. . . . “. . . Heaven’s communion begins on earth. We learn here the keynote of its praise.” “God is worshiped with song and music in the courts above, and as we express our gratitude, we are approximating to the worship of the heavenly hosts.” The Lord deserves our continual praise.

“Praise Him! praise Him! Jesus, our blessed Redeemer! / Heavenly portals, loud with hosannas ring! / Jesus, Savior, reigneth forever and ever; / Crown Him! Crown Him! Prophet, and Priest, and King!”
