The Way Everlasting

Play/Pause Stop
Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. —Psalm 139:23, 24, KJV

I stood, looking up into an amazing blue sky, and asked God right out, “What do I do? I want to do Your will, but I am questioning myself. Is the thing I am contemplating what You would have me do? Do I speak my heart—or do I remain silent?” I kept looking up, and I listened. The thought crossed my mind, Would not it be wonderful if God would actually speak to me right out loud? Becky, this is the way, walk ye in it.

After all, the Bible addresses this very thing. “And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left” (Isaiah 30:21, KJV). These promises are not just words in a book.

They are God’s words in His Book.

Promises to be claimed and used for His glory.

They are for every generation and for all ages, available to all who choose to pick up His Book and make it real and personal. Though I listened intentionally, no voice spoke.

No hint was given regarding which way to turn.

I went about my day, processing my thoughts, still listening.

I invited the Lord to search me, even to try me.

He knows my heart, my thoughts, my motives.

Ah, my motives are sometimes faulty. I can say to the Lord, “Thy will be done,” while planning to do what I want to do and say what I want to say.

It has taken a while, but I have come to realize my good intentions have not always been enough. I have grown weary of my good intentions when they fail to bring about the good results I had intended! This time, I truly sought the Lord for direction.

Later that day, I suddenly sensed the Lord had answered my prayer! I did not hear His voice, but for certain, God had answered as I read the following words.

“As we see souls out of Christ, we are to put ourselves in their place, and in their behalf feel repentance before God, resting not until we bring them to repentance. If we do everything we can for them, and yet they do not repent, the sin lies at their door; but we are still to feel sorrow of heart because of their condition, showing them how to repent, and trying to lead them step by step to Jesus Christ.” I thanked the Lord and asked Him to imbue me with His love, granting me His divine attributes, so I might cooperate with Him in leading a precious soul into the way everlasting.
