While watching a TV interview, I listened to the interviewee reference her job as “her duty.” I focused on her sense of loyalty and commitment to the business.
However, later in the day, I thought more about the word duty as it relates to Christian women. What does it mean? We often equate duty with bringing souls to Christ.
Yes, and while that is the end goal, I wonder if we take the time to give meaningful thought to the how—the plan or the strategy. In the Scriptures, we find that we should use whatever gift we have “to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms” (1 Peter 4:10, NIV).
Hmm. Where to begin? Maslow’s hierarchy of needs shows that we all have basic human needs that follow a progression, starting with physiological needs, ascending to safety, love and belonging, self-esteem, and self-actualization.
If we begin with that understanding, we can effectively relate, speak to, and demonstrate Christ’s love first by ensuring basic human needs are being met.
Only then can hearts and minds be open and receptive to further teaching. Each of us has a unique portfolio of talents and gifts that can influence others.
As women, God blesses us through our acts of service.
A good example to consider is encouraging one another.
“Therefore, encourage one another” (1 Thessalonians 5:11, ESV).
Challenging work situations, relationships, and finances can all discourage.
A listening ear, a call, a card to say, “I am thinking of you,” a five-dollar gas card, a meal, an offer to babysit, or a tad of authentic empathy are good ways to show encouragement.
And remember, there is no need for an audience or proclamation to let your sister in Christ know you are praying for her. She will realize that she has been “prayed up” by the refreshing spirit of peace she will experience. We will be impactful as Christian women if we pray with and for one another. “The heartfelt and persistent prayer . . . can accomplish much” (James 5:16, AMP). Our acts of service demonstrate Christ’s love.
We build up and encourage our sisters as we pray for each other and intercede on their behalf. He hears! We have all been called to active duty! If not now, when? If not you, then who?
