A Sleeping Beauty Miracle, Part 2

Play/Pause Stop
He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.” —Mark 5:34, NIV

Coni’s neurological surgeon made the decision to place a permanent shunt in her brain. On the one hand, there were risks.

On the other hand were three possible outcomes—any one of which would be worth the risk. We went to a small hospital in Wildomar, California, for the surgery.

It was unbelievable! Coni was more alert after the surgery.

Then a week or so later, after a brain scan, her doctor tweaked the shunt, and it was as though he had turned on a switch. Instantly, Coni was back! It was miraculous! She can now walk, play the piano, and sing. Did I mention that she is a musician? She had taught piano, voice, bells, and choir and headed up the music department at Greater Lansing Adventist School in Lansing, Michigan. In fact, she was my piano teacher when I purchased a piano after having two strokes—I used piano practice as a tool in my recovery. Coni started to sing for church at the age of three. Music has always been a major part of her life. She has no memory of the past three years—that is why I call her Sleeping Beauty. She is an absolute miracle.

She went from having an extensive brain bleed to being strong and healthy over a three-year span. She is well on her way to a complete recovery.

When I reflect on God’s timing and the unfolding of His providence, I am amazed. When I moved to California to be with my best friends, I never expected to be a caregiver. I am not physically able to be a caregiver, and my contributions were minimal.

Mostly, I just sat with Coni to give Mike some time for errands or just a walk. I often read Psalms to her or just sat with her. I am convinced that God knew about the aneurysm in Coni’s brain. He knew I would be needed to help support Mike and Coni.

He impressed me to walk away from my condo and go to California three years before I was needed here. What has God set in motion in your life? While it may not yet make any sense from a human perspective, you can trust He knows the end from the beginning. He is working all things out for your good. Trust Him and wait on Him.

You, too, may experience your very own miracle!
