He Is Faithful

My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. —Philippians 4:19, ESV

As believers, we like to quote Philippians 4:19, but when the rubber meets the road, do we really believe it? As I have grown in my Christian walk, I have come to cherish the book of Philippians. Some of my favorite verses include, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (verse 6, ESV). And then, just thirteen verses later, Paul gives us the reason why we need not be anxious. He writes, “My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus” (verse 19, ESV). Oh, if we could only grasp and understand what that really means. Have you ever prayed for something that God did not give you, and years later, you shout out, “Lord, I thank You that You did not give me what I asked for so earnestly”? I recently had one of those moments, and I am still in awe of God and His goodness toward me.

Had God given me what I asked for, my career path would have been different. The experiences I gain on a daily basis and the ministering I get to give people would never have occurred. God is awesome; He knows our beginning from our end, and He truly knows what is best for us. God promises to meet all our needs, both spiritual and material.

The Philippian church had been generous to Paul, and he commended them for their generosity, but Paul had learned to be content with whatever he had.

Even if he was in need, he knew God would provide and would strengthen him (see verse 11). God never lacks the ability to provide for those who trust in Him.

He wants us to be content in every situation, but He will also richly supply what He ordains we should have. He promises, “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4, NIV). Whatever your needs are, when you trust in Him, He will not fail to supply what you need. When what you desire is not from Him, allow Him to bring your heart into alignment with His, and then watch Him meet your needs.

He who promised is faithful!
