The Southwest India Union workers were excited to be part of a Holy Land tour a number of years ago. My husband, our younger son, and I were among the forty-eight members of the tour group. My husband had to attend the General Conference Executive Committee’s Annual Council meetings immediately after the tour, so his plan was to fly from Egypt to the United States of America. One of our friends from America requested tramadol, a pain-relieving medication for his wife who suffered from arthritis. Our first flight took us to Jordan, where we spent two days sightseeing. Then we proceeded to Israel, where we spent another two days. Our last destination was Egypt, where our tour bus reached the border in the evening. At the border, during the baggage check, they found the tramadol in my husband’s bags.
We had no idea it was illegal to bring it into the country.
My husband was arrested and kept in police custody.
What a terrible day! We could not believe it, nor could we do anything about it. After the baggage check was finished, everybody returned to the bus except my son, me, and the tour leaders. We stayed with my husband. When the police insisted we board the bus, my son declared that he would not leave Egypt without his father.
The first thing I did after checking into the hotel was to call some friends who were in the tour group and pray with them. The next day we left for India, but my son stayed, and our church in Egypt took good care of him. I am so thankful for our worldwide church family! Once I arrived home, I asked my neighbors to join me in prayer.
Every day I skipped one meal and prayed, trusting God would take care of the situation. While in prison, my husband faced some challenges, but despite the hard times, he ministered and shared God’s Word with the other prisoners. I believe God had a purpose for him to be in the prison. All praises to Him! Almost four months later, he was released.
The judge declared him innocent, ruling that he was carrying medicine, not drugs. Oh, how we praised God for this miracle! Friends, the “angel of the LORD” still surrounds, protects, and delivers His children today. Place your trust in Him.
He who promised is faithful!
