A True Witness

Play/Pause Stop
Be not a witness against your neighbor without cause, and do not deceive with your lips. —Proverbs 24:28, ESV A truthful witness saves lives, but a false witness is deceitful. —Proverbs 14:25, NIV

Years ago, I met a new church member at a potluck.

We sat across from each other and were introduced by mutual acquaintances. We began an interesting conversation about technology.

However, the tone of her voice sounded confrontational to my ears. I shrank back into my chair and began a silent conversation with the Lord.

“Do you see this, Lord? This person does not seem to like me, and we just met. Surely, I have not had time to offend her.” Then I became aware of a couple of people at the table who seemed to be shrinking into themselves, trying not to draw attention.

I realized that this new member had been given a false picture of my character, and she believed it without taking the time to get to know me.

Today much is heard about false narratives.

And this has led me to wonder how false narrators can influence so many people. Is it their position in the church or community? Their wealth? Their attractiveness? Their persuasiveness? Lucifer held a prominent position in heaven, and his influence led to one-third of the heavenly host being cast out of heaven. Several cult leaders have led followers to their destruction. How many friendships have we missed because we believed someone’s false narrative? How many people have missed heaven because they did not give Christ a chance? They listened to false narratives about His character rather than seeking a relationship with Him. How should we deal with false narrators? “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you” (Ephesians 4:32, ESV).

Let us follow Christ’s example and strive to be faithful and true witnesses for Him. Happily, as the years passed, the new member mentioned earlier did give me a chance. Our subsequent interactions revealed my true character.

She now greets me as a sister in Christ.

Praise the Lord!
