A Mother’s Love Is Matchless

Play/Pause Stop
“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!” —Isaiah 49:15, NIV

Mothers are gifts from God. With His hands and heart, He created mothers in His image to display unconditional love, tender kindness, and self-sacrificing love.

When my mother, Varadhamma, experienced bleeding in her old age, she was taken to the hospital, where she was diagnosed as having cervical cancer.

Tears rolled down my cheeks, and I agonized through sleepless nights, trying to find ways to save her despite being in the final stage of the cancer.

We gave her Ayurvedic medicine, but it was a burning fire to her, and she refused to take it. She did not want to be admitted to the hospital, but whenever she started to bleed, we took her immediately to the hospital for a blood transfusion.

It was a great struggle. She was in Bangalore, India, while we were an hour away, in Hosur. Our son, Pavan, used to care for her needs, and our daughter, Punithain Oman, always inquired about her well-being and prayed for her.

My husband counseled us to be courageous and trust in the Lord. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, we were not allowed to travel from one state to another.

At this, my mother stopped eating, only taking in some liquids. She slept all the time and quickly became dehydrated and anemic. We carefully moved my mother to Hosur to stay with us. She had been bedridden for about fifteen days when she suddenly began to gasp for breath. That night she passed away. She was seventy-eight years old.

Since the lockdown was still in place, the pastor and church officers supported us and allowed us to have her burial at Hosur Cemetery. We thank the Hosur family for their support and care. We thank God that we belong to His big family.

My mother’s love, hard work, smiles, and sincere spirit are sweet memories that often come to mind. We miss her terribly. Yet God’s words comfort me.

“As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you” (Isaiah 66:13, NIV). We understand God’s love through the example of a mother’s love.

Yet His love is even greater. Mightier. Matchless!
