Power in That Name

I have heard many eloquent prayers in my life.

I am ashamed to say this, but I have even been a little jealous of people who pray beautiful, humble, and soul-stirring prayers. One of my closest friends, Kennetia, fits into this category. I love to hear her pray, especially on my behalf ! She prays with a sincerity that shows her love of interceding on behalf of others and knowledge of a person’s need for a touch from our heavenly Father. Some of the eloquent prayers I have heard were a little long. I know our Father hears them because they are from humble, sincere hearts.

It is important to note, however, that God does not hear our prayers just when they are complex, intricate, and take hours to complete. (OK, I am exaggerating when I say “hours,” but I think you understand what I mean.) I have experienced many trials in my life. During most of those, I have spent much time praying, asking God for peace and resolutions to the situations I have found myself in. There was one time, however, when I needed God’s protection and did not have time for a lengthy plea for help. I had lost control of my car while driving. I knew I was going to collide with the semitruck beside me and be killed.

All I could do was yell, again and again, “Jesus! Jesus!” My mind was not focused on how to deliver an elegant prayer that would move the most seasoned Christian. All I knew was that I needed to be saved, and Jesus was the only One who could save me.

And you know what? He did! Yes, I did get hit by that truck, but I walked away with only a few bruises and some pain. Hallelujah! Romans 10:13 states, “For ‘everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved’ ” (NLT). Not only do I believe that with all my heart, but I have experienced it. I do not know whether you appreciate hearing a powerful prayer as much as I do. I will say this, though: know that in times of trouble, you do not need a long, detailed prayer to get through to the Father. Always remember, there is indeed power in the simple, beautiful name of Jesus!
