God Knows Best

Play/Pause Stop
Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. —Proverbs 3:5, 6, KJV

You know how you plan your life, and you think you know just how it will turn out? Well, I have learned that sometimes things do not work out exactly as we think they will. I got married, and we had our daughter, Aprille, and that was it.

We had expected to have at least two children, but it was not to be. So let me tell you how I became reconciled to having only one child.

When Aprille was in cradle roll at Dallas First Church of Seventh-day Adventists, in Texas, United States of America, the leader asked whether anybody played the piano because their pianist was moving away. I timidly raised my hand, and I had a new job! A couple of years later, we moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma. One of the first questions I heard after walking into the church was, “Do you play the piano?” Soon, I was helping with Vacation Bible School, teaching the youth class, and, yes, playing the piano. We moved to Choctaw, Oklahoma, only a couple of years later and joined Choctaw Seventh-day Adventist Church, where we are still members. And sure enough, I was asked to play the piano and help in the primary class.

Soon, I was the primary leader, Children’s Ministries leader, and Communication secretary. I also volunteered at Parkview Adventist Academy, where Aprille went to school for ten years. I still volunteer in their library, many years later.

I now realize God knew me much better than I knew myself. If I had had several children, I would not have had the time or the energy to volunteer.

But now, I have kids all over the place! Last month at the Oklahoma camp meeting, I was in the auditorium bathroom and heard a little voice from behind one of the shower curtains, “Hi, Miss Robin!” “Who’s that?” I asked. “Grace!” Little Grace goes to my church, and of course, she is one of many of my kids whom I meet unexpectedly.

his thrills my soul. What a blessing! God knew what I needed. Isn’t He amazing?
