Verse:The waters swelled so mightily on the earth that all the high mountains under the whole heaven were covered; the waters swelled above the mountains, covering them fifteen cubits deep. —Genesis 7:19, 20, NRSV
Most scientists and many theologians deny the historicity of the Flood account in Genesis 6–8. For them, this is only a mythological story like the Babylonian flood tale called the Epic of Gilgamesh. By contrast, later Bible writers take the account of Noah and the universal flood literally in both the Old Testament (Psalm 104:6–9) and the New Testament (Matthew 24:37–39; Hebrews 11:7; 1 Peter 3:20; 2 Peter 2:5; 3:6).
The February 5, 1867, issue of the Advent Review and Sabbath Herald carried an article by D. T. Bourdeau entitled “Geology and the Bible.” The author claimed, “Genuine Geology is as true as the Bible, and it does not contradict the Bible; for truth cannot contradict truth. Yet it is strange that some should pretend that there is a discrepancy between this science and the Bible; and it is stranger still that some who profess to believe the Bible, should adopt views purporting to be based on Geology, which are antagonistic to plain Bible facts, and yet claim that there is harmony between their views and the Bible.”5 The scientific bases of Bourdeau’s assertion were demonstrated by the self-taught geologist George McCready Price (1870–1963). Several of his books provided conclusive evidence that the geologic columns were formed not by a slow evolutionary process but by a worldwide flood. Price declared that his work was “to clear the old evolutionary structures from the ground” so that other creationists could build.6 Many non-Adventist creationists have recognized his outstanding contribution to flood geology.
Evolutionists believe that the geological columns were formed over several evolutionary eras lasting millions of years. They believe that uncountable, more primitive forms of life existed and died prior to the appearance of human beings.
If this were the case, then death would have already existed long before the sin of Adam and Eve (Genesis 3). On the other hand, the biblical account of the Flood, as it reads, is consistent with the biblical teaching that death came into the world through Adam’s sin (Romans 5:12). Only from this perspective does the plan of salvation make sense!
