Verse:He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, for He shall bear their iniquities. —Isaiah 53:11
Saturday, February 27, 1988, in London.
The popular weekly BBC television program That’s Life! featured the life of Nicholas Winton (1909–2015), who was sitting in the first row of the audience.
At one point, TV presenter Esther Rantzen showed an old scrapbook Winton’s wife, Grete, had found in their attic. The forgotten scrapbook carried the records, photos, names, and documents of the Czech Jewish children he had rescued during the Nazi occupation. The story goes back to 1939, when the twenty-nine-year-old Winton went from his native London to Prague, Czechoslovakia.
There he worked during the day as a stock-broker, and at night he rescued children, sending them by train to the United Kingdom.
He saved 669 children until war broke out and kids could no longer leave Czechoslovakia. In fact, he kept his heroic deeds to himself for almost fifty years.
Even his own wife, whom he married in 1948, didn’t know about his rescue efforts until she found his scrapbook. At the end of the That’s Life! program, Rantzen asked the audience members who owed their lives to Winton to stand up.
He was deeply moved when he realized that the studio audience was composed largely of the children he had rescued. From then on, those grown-up children considered him their honorary father. On December 31, 2002, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of his work and became Sir Nicholas Winton.
On October 28, 2014, he was awarded the highest honor of the Czech Republic. He died on July 1, 2015, at 106. This touching experience reminds us of Christ, who left His heavenly throne, came to our dark and sinful world to rescue us from impending eternal death, and will soon take us to heaven. In His priestly prayer, He even asked, “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me” (John 17:24, NIV). The time is coming when we will meet Him face-to-face and even talk to Him. What a glorious meeting it will be with the redeemed from all nations and ages! We are told that “He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied” (Isaiah 53:11). Will He see you there as well?
