True Modern Miracles

Adults · From the book Every Day a New Beginning

Verse:

A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it shall not come near you. —Psalm 91:7

Modern charismatic miracles occur exclusively onstage in huge auditoriums and are broadcast to as many people as possible.

God, however, does not depend on marketing strategies to work on behalf of His faithful servants (Matthew 7:21–23). In her inspiring book A Thousand Shall Fall, Susi Hasel Mundy tells the amazing story of how God miraculously protected her father, Franz Hasel, and their family in Hitler’s Germany during World War II.

As a Seventh-day Adventist pacifist, Franz Hasel “was drafted and assigned to Pioneer Company 699, Hitler’s elite troops who built bridges at the front lines.” On July 1, 1941, the Pioneer Company was ordered to cross the Polish border and enter Ukraine. After days of marching, many of the soldiers were exhausted.

Those unable to continue were simply left behind to die from illness or to be killed by the Russians. Franz was also worn out and burning with fever.

His socks were in shreds, and huge blisters covered his swollen feet. With no hope for the future, Franz prayed, “Dear Lord, You know that my life is committed to You. When I left home, I felt assured that You would bring me back safely to my family. Now You have given me another promise. But here I am, sick and unable to continue. Unless You help me, I am lost. I know that You are a promise-keeping God. I commit myself into Your hands.” Soon afterward, he fell asleep.

At the wake-up call at 3:15 A.M., to his amazement, his feet were completely healed—covered with healthy skin and no scars! This was only one of the many threatening circumstances through which God protected him.

Of the twelve hundred men who comprised the Pioneer Company, only seven survived, and Franz was one of them. Franz indeed experienced God’s protective care as promised in Psalm 91:7 —“A thousand may fall at your side...; but it shall not come near you.” Back home, Franz’s wife and children also witnessed the fulfillment of verse 10— “No evil shall befall you, nor shall any plague come near your dwelling.” Unquestionably, God’s power has not weakened, and His promises will never wear out. He cares for you and will never ever forsake you. He can protect you today as He did the Hasel family.
