God Is Not Unfair

Women · From the book New Every Morning

Verse:

For God is not unjust. He will not forget how hard you have worked for him and how you have shown your love to him by caring for other believers, as you still do. —Hebrews 6:10, NLT

In 2019, our health professionals team received an invitation to present a nursing conference in Kenya. The team coordinator provided a list of the requirements, which included a visa to enter the country.

The mission trip was scheduled for late May.

Since I was invited to attend my great niece’s cotillion in Maryland during Easter weekend, I planned to make a personal visit to the Kenyan embassy in Washington, DC. I carefully assembled all the documents required for the visa application and eagerly awaited the day for our air travel. After attending the cotillion and visiting with family and friends, it was time to visit the Kenyan embassy.

We arrived very early and waited for the office to be opened. Once inside the door, we waited our turn and presented our documents.

We had anticipated completing the process in the four business days left before returning home but were told that the visa application process would take ten business days. The attendant also said we had two options: purchase a money order for the expedited fee to get the visas before leaving or provide a self-addressed priority envelope to have the visas mailed to us. He directed us to a post office three blocks away where we could obtain either option. Arriving at the post office, we found people waiting outside a locked door. We prayed and waited forty minutes, but no one showed up to let us in.

We walked back to the embassy and presented our dilemma to the attendant. I began explaining to him that we were going on a mission trip and that we had previously worked in Kenya for six years as missionaries.

He listened carefully, told us to take a seat, and disappeared with our documents. I continued praying for divine intervention.

Before reaching my seat, I was called back to the desk. “Have a nice trip,” the attendant said as he handed us our passports. I opened the passports and was pleasantly surprised to see the visas enclosed. When I asked about the fee, he just smiled.

This reminded me of God’s promise, found in our text for today, that we can depend on Him. He keeps His promises. Let us put God to the test.

He never fails.
