Nature’s Plastic Surgery

Women · From the book New Every Morning

Verse:

And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. —Luke 11:9, KJV

Have you ever been dissatisfied with your physical appearance? I was OK with mine except for one thing. It seemed that I was forever having to push my glasses up, for they kept sliding down to within an inch of the tip of my nose! “Oh, for a more prominent nose,” I sighed. I didn’t want a beak —just enough bridge that my glasses would stay in place! Since I knew of so many people who needed help with problems or disabilities far more serious than mine, I never once thought of mentioning it to God in prayer.

I didn’t want to seem vain. So I didn’t ask God to reconfigure my nose.

One day, my godchild, Kai, and I were outside painting.

When we reached the kerosene tank, we did the top and sides first.

Then I stepped under the tank to show Kai how to paint the bottom with a roller. The wooden rack that held the tank had crosspieces that stabilized it.

They were about level with my knees.

I forgot about them when I went to step back out.

My knees hit the braces, and I overbalanced, falling straight forward and hitting the ground hard! My glasses were pushed into my face! Amazingly enough, the lenses stayed intact, and the strong titanium frames were fine once I bent them back into shape. Kai helped me into the house and gave me first aid.

Every part of me that slammed into the ground was bruised and painful except for my face. Looking into a mirror, I saw that my face was unhurt except for an indented line across the top of my nose between my eyes. It wasn’t very noticeable when I wore my glasses. But I wondered whether I’d have that sunken look forever! My fall had been the result of my carelessness. And I hope I never have another such accident.

I believe that my guardian angel kept me from suffering a broken neck.

As time passed, extra cartilage or bone grew enough that my glasses stayed put. Nature’s plastic surgery at work! Only God can take something bad and bring something good out of it, granting my wish in such a unique way! Now I talk to Him about everything!
