Verse:

And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden.” —Genesis 3:2

A three-year-old boy in Australia found some eggs in his family’s backyard, put them in a container, and placed them in his bedroom closet.

Sometime later, his mother was surprised to hear strange sounds in her little boy’s room, and when she investigated, she was alarmed to discover seven young eastern brown snakes. The eggs her son discovered and kept had produced a nest of the second-most venomous land snakes in the world—right in his bedroom! A snake in the wild is one thing. Snakes belong in the wild. And while many people would rather they never encountered a snake anywhere at any time, to discover one in the great outdoors is to discover a snake on its own turf. Venomous snakes belong in the wild.

They definitely do not belong in bedroom closets —especially the closets of three-year-old boys! In the word of God, Satan is depicted as a serpent, and too many people are welcoming him into their home.

In today’s modern world, there are multiple avenues via which Satan is able to access our lives, the most obvious being television and the internet.

And while nobody would think having seven eastern brown snakes in your home is harmless, all too often, the danger of Satan’s presence is unperceived, even dismissed. Consider sin’s entrance into the world: “And the woman said to the serpent ….” Undoubtedly, the serpent through which Satan communicated was very beautiful, and Eve was fascinated by what she heard and saw.

But if Eve hadn’t parleyed with the snake, history would be altogether different. If Eve had dismissed Satan rather than granting him access to her mind, the Fall would not have occurred, and sin would not have entered the world.

While resisting temptation can often be a difficult thing, the truth is that Satan’s job is often made easy by people who carelessly invite him into their life. Invite Jesus to defend you today and keep Satan out of the place he does not belong.
