Discovering Gold and Diamonds

Adults · From the book The Hope Of Glory

Verse:

Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law. —Psalm 119:18

In 2013, the government of South Korea approved the construction of Tower Infinity. While it will become one of the top ten tallest buildings in the world, what sets Tower Infinity apart is that when completed, it will have the ability to be “invisible.” Projectors mounted on the skyscraper’s exterior will project images of the surrounding area onto the building, meaning it will appear to people viewing the 1,476-feet-tall structure from a distance that they are looking right through it.* In the same way, it is possible to read the Bible and see nothing at all. Many atheists have read the Bible cover to cover. Some passages in the Bible are challenging and don’t lend themselves to easy understanding. Peter said that Paul wrote some things that are hard to understand (2 Peter 3:16).

Closed eyes will never be able to discern even the plainest truths of God’s Word. When you approach the Bible with a prayerful attitude, you will begin to see the beauty and the depth of God’s Word.

Those who want to find gold or diamonds usually have to do a lot of digging. But the miner considers all the difficult digging worthwhile when valuable minerals are unearthed. Although it happens infrequently, gems are occasionally found on or near the earth’s surface. In 2019, a hobbyist with a metal detector located a 49-ounce (1.4-kilogram) gold nugget near Kalgoorlie in Western Australia.† In 1975, a white diamond weighing more than 16 carats was found by a visitor to the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas, where park visitors are allowed to keep any diamonds they find.‡ In the Bible, statements such as “God is love” (1 John 4:8) are easy to find. And it takes little study to understand, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39).

As you pray, ask God to open your eyes.

Then dig into His Word, determined to see what lies beneath the surface. You will see deeper and deeper. And in doing so, you will uncover many of the Bible’s priceless treasures.
